General Knowledge Defence & Security Awareness Competitive Exams

Defence & Security Awareness covers India’s armed forces, ranks, commands, missiles, DRDO, paramilitary and central armed police forces, defence exercises, important operations, awards, security agencies and basic national security concepts. This chapter is useful for General Knowledge, Current Affairs, Defence Exams, Police Exams, SSC, Banking and interview preparation.

What is Defence & Security Awareness?

Defence awareness means understanding the structure, role and importance of the armed forces and security institutions of a country. It includes the Army, Navy, Air Force, missiles, defence research, border security, internal security, cyber security, military exercises, ranks, awards and important operations.

National security means protecting the country’s sovereignty, territory, people, economy, borders, sea routes, airspace, cyberspace and critical infrastructure. It includes external defence as well as internal security.

Simple idea: Defence protects the country from external threats; security protects the country from both external and internal threats.
Area Main Role Examples
Army Land warfare and territorial defence. Infantry, artillery, armoured corps
Navy Maritime defence and sea security. Warships, submarines, aircraft carriers
Air Force Air defence and air operations. Fighter aircraft, transport aircraft, helicopters
DRDO Defence research and development. Missiles, radars, systems, technology
CAPFs Border security, internal security and special duties. BSF, CRPF, CISF, ITBP, SSB
Security Agencies Intelligence, investigation and counter-terror work. IB, RAW, NIA and other agencies

“Defence GK becomes easier when each topic is linked with force, role, rank, weapon system, exercise, operation and organization.”
